Men’s Soccer Falls to WashU in Close 2-0 Affair

Record sits at 3-3-1

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team made the two and a half hour trip to battle Washington University in St. Louis, under the lights, Tuesday, Sept. 20 at Francis Olympic Field. The Titans could not capitalize on the several chances as the Bears' net a pair of second-half goals to take the 2-0 victory. With the setback, IWU's record now sits at 3-3-1, while WashU climbed back to the .500 mark with a 2-2 overall record.

Just moments after the opening kickoff, the Bears offense wasted no time testing the limits of sophomore goalkeeper Spencer Fulton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community). Fulton dove to his left, utilizing all six-foot-three of his frame to deflect a low, powerful, shot that wound up dribbling out of play for a WashU corner.

The Titans' first scoring opportunity of the match came in the 15th minute as junior Brody Seaton (Dunlap, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) entered the six-yard box as freshman Kalabi Kamau (Alpharetta, Ga-Marist School) sent in a cross attempt from the right side of the pitch. Seaton's header landed on the turf with some English, causing the WashU keeper to shift direction mid air as he deflected the ball wide of the net and the threat was thwarted.

After a Bear violation near the corner of the field that warranted a free kick just inside of the corner mark for the Titans in the 32nd minute. Senior Nico Thomas (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Bethany) was on the receiving end of the free kick and used his head to send a dangerous ball that was inches from escaping the WashU keeper.

At the intermission, neither team was able to capitalize on its opportunities as the battle remained tied, 0-0. Both goalkeepers were tested in the opening 45 as both offenses tallied five shots.

WashU broke the scoreless tie in the 63rd minute on a 50-50 ball that was won by the home team and a slow rolling shot ensued that just crossed the goal line as the Bears clung to a 1-0 advantage.

The dagger came in the 81st minute as the Bears' pressure paid dividends as the score jumped to 2-0 in favor of the home team.

In the end, WashU's defensive line defused the Titans' push in the final nine minutes as the Bears claimed the 2-0 victory.

WashU outshot IWU by a final mark of 13-9. The Bears held the heavy, 9-3, advantage in corner chances.

Fulton tallied five saves in the setback. Sophomore Mush Bakirdan (Morton, Ill.-Morton) topped the Titans with a pair of shots.

The Green and White will turn its attention to the team's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener against Carthage College, Saturday night, Sept. 24. The IWU women's soccer team will compete in the first leg of a double header, with a 5 p.m. start. The men's soccer team is scheduled to start right after with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
