Season Comes to a Close as Baseball Upended by No. 11 North Central

Finishes with 16-21 record

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell, 8-4, to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe, No. 11 North Central College, Monday, May 9 in a game that was rescheduled from last week in Naperville, Ill. With the loss, the Titans' 2022 campaign came to an end after failing to make the CCIW Tournament. The Green and White ended the year on a six-game losing streak, finishing with an overall record of 16-21 (7-11 CCIW). The Cardinals record sits at 30-10 (14-4 CCIW).

The Titans' offense exploded for five hits in the first inning that manufactured three runs. In fact, the first four reached base safely. Senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) got the scoring started by singling through the right side with the bases loaded and no one out. The base knock allowed senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) to score. Senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) laced a single down the left field line as he drove in senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) and sophomore Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) to open up the quick 3-0 cushion.

NCC scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a costly Green and White miscue. A defensive gem, courtesy of junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) gunned down the potential tying run at home plate to keep the score at 3-2 in favor of the Titans, heading into the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, the Titans tacked on one run as DiLello grounded out to second base, scoring Greer, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. The score stood at 4-2, IWU, as the game progressed to the bottom of the fifth.

The Cardinals scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to open up an 8-4 lead.

The NCC bullpen was able to shut the door and thwart a comeback opportunity as the Cardinals went on to win the contest by a final score of 8-4.

Freshman Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.-Sherrard) earned the start on the mound for the Green and White. The freshman worked five-and-a-third innings, allowing seven runs (three earned), he struck out a pair, and allowed nine hits. Hartman took the loss (1-4).

NCC outhit IWU by a final tally of 9-8. Greer assembled a 2-for-4 afternoon, while DiLello and Mutter each notched a pair of RBI.

The Green and White will look to the 2023 campaign.
