Softball Cruises Past Carroll in CCIW Tournament

Titans to play tomorrow, May 7, at 12 p.m.

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team rode an early lead to a 9-1 run-rule victory over third-seeded Carroll University Friday, May 6, in the second game of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament at Millikin University's Workman Family Softball Complex.

After junior Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) pitched out of a bases loaded jam, escaping the inning with a grounder to second, the Titan offense grabbed an early run on two hits and two walks. Freshman Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) led things off with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Senior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) then came through with a two-out poke up the middle, scoring Kuhn, to give IWU a 1-0 edge after the first inning.

The Titans tacked on two more in the second, as sophomore Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) singled with one away. Kuhn followed with an RBI double and then came around to score as junior Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) laced a triple to the right center fence.

Carroll cracked the run column with an RBI single in the fourth, but Illinois Wesleyan got the run right back on a bases loaded walk by freshman Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) to take a 4-1 advantage into the fifth.

The Pioneers gifted the Titans three runs in the bottom of the fifth, as IWU capitalized on three errors to open up a 7-1 advantage into the sixth.

Mardjetko made quick work of CU in the sixth, throwing a 1-2-3 inning to bring IWU back to the plate. Freshman Kennady Estes (Warrenton, Mo.-Warrenton) came through with a two-out pinch-hit single to get Illinois Wesleyan's rally started. Fontanetta followed with a two-bagger down the left field line to score Estes and push the Titan lead to 8-1. With Fontanetta on third after a passed ball, Kuhn ripped a single through the left side to bring home Fontanetta and walk-off the run-rule win, 9-1.

The Green and White finished with 10 hits to Carroll's four. Kuhn and Moore each went 2-for-4, while Kuhn added two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Fontanetta caught fire in the nine-hole, going 2-for-2 with four runs scored, a run driven in, and two walks, while Palczynski went 1-for-1 before the Pios opted to walk her three times.

Mardjekto threw a complete game, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out three. With the win, she moved to 11-5 in the circle this season.

Second-seeded Illinois Wesleyan will battle the winner of tonight's game between top-seeded Millikin and No. 4 North Central tomorrow, May 7, at noon.
