Men’s Lacrosse Runs Away with Win over Spartans

Titans honored and raised funds for St. Jude

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team secured a 19-10 non-conference win over Aurora University inside Tucci Stadium Saturday, April 2. The Titans improved to 5-4 on the year as Aurora slipped to 4-5 on the season.

The Titans were led by senior co-captain Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) who notched a game-high five goals in addition to two assists. Junior Jaxon Hendrickson (Langley, British Columbia-Westtown) recorded his first hattrick of the season for a total of three points.

Tied three-all at the 6:28 mark, Smith took IWU's first lead of the game after fellow senior Paul Mucci (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Bloomfield) found him for the goal to put the Titans up 4-3. Not long after, senior Griffin DeMilt (Toledo, Ohio.-Ottawa Hills) widened the Titans lead by two, 5-3.

After 15 minutes of play IWU held the lead and never looked back.

Senior faceoff specialist Zac Taylor (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton) found the back of AU's net after winning the quarter-opening faceoff to extend the lead, 6-3. The Spartans answered with a goal of their own to close the gap back to two, trailing 6-4.

Goals from sophomores Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) and Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) built on the Titans advantage. Aurora was not far behind as the Spartans grabbed a goal of their own as IWU held an 8-4 lead with 8:17 remaining in the half.

At the 3:21 mark, DeMilt net his second of the day to give IWU a 8-5 edge. With 20 seconds remaining on the clock, Aurora slipped one past the Titans to end the half, 9-6 IWU.

Coming out of the half with a 9-6 advantage, IWU scored a quick goal credited to senior Charles Hildestad (Carlock, Ill.-St. Viator) from an assist by Smith. Junior Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) added to the Titans scoresheet at the 13:44 mark on another assist by Smith, as the Titans kept the lead 11-6.

After a Spartan goal, the Green and White answered with two of their own from goal-leader Smith, to give IWU a 13-7 advantage at the 9:27 mark. Smith was not done yet as he answered another Aurora goal, just 24 seconds after, to keep IWUs cushion intact, 14-8.

Smith jump started a four-goal unanswered run for the Green and White, ending the third quarter, 17-8 for the Titans. IWU outscored the Spartans 8-2 in the third period alone.

IWU and AU both net two goals in the final 15. Aurora put away the first two goals in the quarter within the first six minutes, closing the deficit, before IWU tacked on a few more to run away victorious, 19-10.

IWU jumps back into College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play Wednesday, April 6 for a game against North Central College inside Tucci Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
