One Up, One Down: Softball Splits with Carroll

Khoury homers twice, Mardjetko tosses five-inning shutout

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team split a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader with Carroll University Saturday, April 16, at Inspiration Field. The Titans (17-10, 5-1 CCIW) took game one, 8-0, in five innings, but the Pioneers (14-8, 6-2 CCIW) took game two, 6-3.

Game One: Carroll 0, Illinois Wesleyan 8 (5 inn.)
Junior Nina Mardjetko (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) pitched a five-inning, three-hit shutout and the Titans capitalized on Pioneer miscues to take game one in run-rule fashion.

After Mardjetko struck out the side in the first, IWU went to work in the bottom of the second. Senior Hayley Earl (Washington, Ill.-Washington) belted a solo homer to leadoff the frame and freshman Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) blasted a homer of her own to push Illinois Wesleyan ahead, 2-0, into the third.

The Titans piled on four more runs in the third after another 1-2-3 inning by Mardjetko. Sophomore Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) ripped a single to left and promptly swiped second. Junior Mikayla Fairfield (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) followed with an infield hit and sophomore Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) walked to load the bases. The Pioneers unraveled a bit defensively as two errors allowed the Titans to double their lead, before back-to-back grounders opened up a 6-0 IWU advantage.

Senior Colleen Palczynski (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) singled with two away in the fifth. Freshman Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) followed with a double and Khoury walked to load the bases. Junior Nora Adams (Chesterfield, Mo.-Nerinx Hall) then dumped a RBI single into left and Turner walked it off with a single to right center, scoring Kuhn.

Mardjetko picked up her sixth win of the season in the circle, recording the second shutout of her career. The Lemont, Ill. struck out seven over five innings, tying a season-high in Ks.

As a team, Illinois Wesleyan outhit Carroll, 9-3. Eight different Titans recorded a hit, led by Turner who went 2-for-2 with a run scored and one driven in.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 3, Carroll 6
An early six-run deficit proved to be too much to overcome for Illinois Wesleyan in the second game. Carroll did all of its damage in the third, scoring six runs on five hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch, to chase IWU starter Natalie Grubczak (Medinah, Ill.-Lake Park) early.  Senior Madie Monk (Manteno, Ill.-Manteno) entered the circle in relief and kept the Pioneers in check to maintain the 6-0 deficit into the fifth.

Trailing 6-0 into the fifth, Kuhn singled on a ball that was lost in the sun and came around to score on Khoury's second round-tripper of the day. The homer pulled IWU within four, 6-2. Senior Kaylee Bowers (Champaign, Ill.-Champaign Central) extended the inning with an infield single and Turner followed with a double to move two into scoring position, but a Carroll pitching change proved timely. CU's Riley Pavelka entered in relief and forced back-to-back flyouts by the Green and White to strand two.

After Monk worked her way out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth, IWU pushed another run across in the sixth. Junior Madison Moore (Verona, Wis.-Edgewood) got things going with a single, and Earl doubled to the right field fence. A walk by Khoury and a wild pitch plated Moore, but IWU's comeback effort ended there as the Titans went down in order in the seventh, falling 6-3.

Illinois Wesleyan's homestand continues Wednesday, March 20, when the Titans host Millikin University for a CCIW twin bill at Inspiration Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
