Men’s Lacrosse Concludes Spring Break Trip at Grove City

Titans start CCIW play March 26

GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team wrapped up its spring break trip after a 18-8 loss at Grove City College Saturday, March 19. The Titans (3-4) saw senior goalkeeper Thomas Laduzinsky (Geneva, Ill.-Wheaton Academy) record 16 saves. Freshman goalkeeper Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) also went in for the Green and White making his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter where the freshman picked up two saves.

IWU saw itself down early in the first quarter. Two goals courtesy of seniors Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) and Daniel Dickerson (Wheaton, Ill.-St. Francis College) gave the Titans their only lead of the game 2-1. Grove City answered back to tie the game at two, which started a four goal unanswered run for the Wolverines. Smith's and Dickerson's goals were the only two IWU net in the first 15, ending the quarter 6-2.

At the 12:43 mark Grove City continued to apply the pressure adding two more goals to its stat line in the second quarter as IWU trailed 8-2. Senior Charles Hildestad (Carlock, Ill.-St. Viator) ended GC's six-goal run with a shot and goal of his own at the 9:31 mark, closing the gap 8-3. Only 15 seconds later the Wolverines came right back to push the deficit back to six as they led, 9-3.

IWU closed out the half with back-to-back goals credited to Dickerson, who grabbed his second of the day, and sophomore Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap). Black slipped one off a running shot above the Grove City keeper's shoulder forcing a GCC timeout with around five minutes to go in the half.

Straight off a timeout and a Grove City faceoff win, Laduzinsky stopped a GC opportunity ending the half 9-5 for the Wolverines.

In the third quarter IWU saw a similar result to the first. Grove City scored an additional six goals  to the Titans one. After two goals by GC, Smith net the Green and White's only goal in the quarter, as the Titans still trailed 11-6 with 6:46 to go. The Wolverines tallied four more goals after Smith's to end the third up, 15-6.

Junior Carson Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) opened the final quarter with a Titan goal at the 14:34 mark. After Dickerson gained possession off the opening faceoff, Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) found his brother to put the Titans at seven. IWU created multiple chances, but Grove City kept the Green and White from scoring. It wasn't until a successful clear where the Wolverines were able to answer for its 16th goal of the day, leading 16-7 with 13:30 to go.

Around the 10:15 mark on a man-up opportunity, Grove City net another goal to widen the lead 17-7. The Wolverines got another opportunity, which put them at 18, although it was quickly answered by the Titans 20 seconds later as Carson Kiichle found the back of the net once again.

With 8:11 to go on the scoreboard IWU trailed by a difference of 10, 18-8. Down by a 10-goal difference IWU held off Grove City for the remainder of the game and was unable to capitalize on its opportunities as the Green and White head home after a 18-8 loss.

The Titans will be back in action a week from today Saturday, March 26 as they open College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play against newcomers Transylvania University. The game will take place in Lexington, Ky. at 1 p.m.
