Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Defeat at No. 4 CNU

Titans to play Catholic Wednesday, March 16

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team was defeated 29-8 by No. 4 Christopher Newport University Sunday, March 13. The Titans (3-2) were outshot 70-21 (SOG 51-17) by CNU (7-0).

Senior goalkeeper Thomas Laduzinsky (Geneva, Ill.-Wheaton Academy) notched a career-high 21 saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Oximana (Seattle, Wash.-Bishop Blanchet) entered the game late in the third quarter and recorded one save.

CNU got off to a fast start as the Captains packed on six goals to push them outfront with 4:15 remaining in the first 15. Senior Charles Hildestad (Carlock, Ill.-St. Viator) ended the Titans' dry patch with IWU's first goal of the day and just under a minute and a half remaining in the first quarter.

With some momentum on their side, a well-executed clear attempt, and a fast break, found sophomore Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) for a diving shot to secure the Titans second goal of the day. After 15 minutes of play, CNU was still in the lead 6-2.

To open the second quarter, the Captains added three more goals putting CNU up 9-2 with 10:27 remaining on the clock. Hildestad aided in another successful clear attempt, and added a goal from a Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) assist to cut the deficit to six, 9-3 for CNU.

IWU added one more goal to the Captains four, ending the half 13-4 in favor of CNU.

Freshman Sam Skelton (Portland, Ore.-Franklin) notched his first goal in the Green and White uniform. The Portland, Ore. native grabbed the ball from the Titans defending third and blew by the Captains defense to put one past CNU's goalkeeper. Skelton tallied IWU's fifth goal as the Green and White trailed 17-5 with 4:47 to go in the third quarter.

In the fourth, senior Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) scored the Titans' next three goals. A quick man-up goal at the 14:29 mark put the Titans score at six but CNU quickly added on four more goals, widening the lead 25-6. Smith netted an additional two goals but CNU answered right back with two of its own, maintaining the lead 27-8 with 4:12 to go.

The Titans could not hold off the Captains as they added two more goals to end the game, 29-8.

IWU makes its next stop in Washington, D.C to face off against Catholic University Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. ET.
