Titans Hang Tough with Fontbonne

Illinois Wesleyan now 4-3 on the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team hung tough with a Fontbonne University squad that sits just outside the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Top-15 Tuesday night, Feb. 8. The Titans (4-3) took the first set 25-20, but the Griffins (6-1) rallied to take the next three 25-19, 25-22, and 25-21.

Sophomore Michael Eastman (Chicago, Ill.-St. Ignatius) led the Titans with 15 kills on a .216 clip, while recording a program record seven service aces. Sophomores KJ Johnson (Saint John, Ind.-Marian Catholic) and Alec Mucha (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva), along with freshman Jake Kougan (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) tallied six kills apiece.

Mucha, who hit a team-best .308 for the match, tied sophomore Julian Perez (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) for the team lead with six blocks. Kougan and fellow freshman Ryan Myers (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson) notched three each.

Sophomore Bradley Benson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont Township) and freshman Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) split setting duties, finishing with 18 and 12 assists, respectively.

Illinois Wesleyan hit .154 for the match to Fontbonne's .230 clip. IWU finished with 33 digs to the Griffins' 53, while the Titans held an 8-1 edge in service aces.

After a dig from Benson, Myers set Eastman for a kill to put IWU up 18-17 in the first set and force a Fontbonne timeout. Another kill from Eastman upped the Titan lead to 19-17, before kills by Mucha and Perez brought about another Griffin timeout.

Eastman came through once again, this time with an ace, to keep momentum swinging in favor of the Green and White, 24-20. Mucha and Perez then combined for a set-clinching block, to give Illinois Wesleyan a 25-20 victory.

In the second set, the two squads played to 5-5, 9-9, and 14-14 ties before the Griffins pulled away 19-17. Fontbonne went on to score six of the set's final seven points en route to a 25-19 win, evening the match at one.

Illinois Wesleyan fought its way back from an early deficit in the third, as Kougan and Perez teamed up for a block to knot the score at 12 all. With the score even at 16, moments later, the Griffins rattled off three straight points to push ahead, 19-16. A block by Mucha and Myers pulled the Titans within two, 24-22, but Fontbonne closed the set with a kill to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Green and White faded in the fourth as the Griffins took the set 25-21, edging IWU in four sets.

Illinois Wesleyan embarks on a three-game roadtrip beginning with a trek to Aurora University Thursday, Feb. 10. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
