Women’s Hoops Wins Big in CCIW Opener

Titans put up 100+ points for first time since 2017-18 season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team saw 15 different players score in a 100-58 rout of Elmhurst University Wednesday night, Nov. 30, to kick off College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. The win moved the Green and White's (6-2, 1-0 CCIW) win streak to five, while the Bluejays bounced to 1-5 (0-1 CCIW).

A lengthy box score saw four Titans hit double-digit points, with sophomore Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) leading the way with 22 points as IWU scored its most points since the 2017-18 season. Junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) and sophomore Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) tallied 14 points apiece, and sophomore Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) added 11.

Freshman Sara Balli (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) contributed a career-high seven points off the bench as IWU's non-starters combined for a season-high 46 points. IWU also dished out its most assists in a game this season, finishing with 23 as senior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) and freshman Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) tied for the team lead with three apiece.

The Titans finished 39-for-80 from the field (48.8 percent), and knocked down a season-high 12 three-pointers on 29 attempts (41.4 percent). IWU finished 10-of-17 at the free throw line, where EU went 13-for-18. The Bluejays finished with a field goal percentage of 39.2, going just 5-for-21 from the long line.

Illinois Wesleyan held a 42-37 lead on the glass, leading to a 19-8 advantage in second chance points thanks to 15 offensive rebounds. IWU used 29 EU turnovers to mount a 36-9 lead in points off miscues, while also tallying leads in points in the paint (54-28), and fast break (20-5).

The Green and White never trailed in the contest as Carlson kicked to Palmer for a wide open three to give IWU a quick edge. Carlson later hit Powers for a triple before Huber's and-one off of junior Taylor Tarver's (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) steal gave the home team a 27-14 lead after the opening period.

IWU used four three-pointers and a handful of EU turnovers to expand its lead in the second quarter. A Knutson and-one followed by three-balls from Palmer and Powers broke the game open, 48-23.

After leading 52-26 coming out of halftime, the Titans went off for 30 points in the third quarter before expanding their lead to as many as 47. Junior Emma Kornak's (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) turnaround bucket put the Green and White over the century as IWU closed out a 100-58 win.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to the road Saturday, Dec. 3, for a CCIW clash at Carroll University. Tipoff between the Titans and Pioneers is slated for 2 p.m. inside Van Male Fieldhouse and will serve as the front end of a doubleheader with the IWU men's basketball team.
