Women’s Soccer Soars Past Pioneers to Advance to CCIW Championship

Titans host championship game Saturday, Nov. 3 in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team advanced to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championship after a 4-0 victory over Carroll University in the semifinal match Wednesday, Nov. 2 at Neis Field. The Titans improved their overall record to 9-4-3 as Carroll ends its 2022 campaign at 11-4-5.

IWU saw three different goal scores led by sophomore Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) who notched two goals, while seniors Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) and Rachel White (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) notched one a piece. Steffens and Rachel White also earned an assist each in addition to fellow senior Maggie Peters (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) and freshman Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic). On defense, senior Heather Dietrich (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo) sat in between the posts and earned the shutout for the Green and White.

The Titans dominated in the first 45, outshooting the Pioneers 10-3 and 3-0 shots on frame. IWU created prime opportunities early in the half, with around 37 minutes to go before intermission as Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) blasted one towards Caroll's net and forced a team save which kept the game tied nil-nil.

It was not until the 28:25 minute mark where Timerman put the Titans on the board and took the first lead of the game, 1-0. Rachel White made her way to a free kick opportunity just at the halfway line. White soared the ball into the Pio's box where Timerman got on the end of it and put it away.

Rachel White was not finished yet, as around 11 minutes later, fellow senior Steffens had possession of the ball in the Pioneers attacking half. A lay off courtesy of the Normal, Ill. native found White, who did not hesitate to take a shot, and beat the Carroll keeper to give the Titans a 2-0 lead to the end the half.

In the second 45, and 27:40 to go in the game, Sawyer White took on a Carroll defender down the line. White nutmegged the Pio defender and kept her momentum as she raced down the wing. A crossed ball into the box found CCIW goal leader, Steffens, who quickly controlled the ball and beat the Carroll Keeper for IWU's third goal of the game.

Ahead 3-0, IWU did not take its foot off the pedal. Similar to the first half, just six minutes after Steffens goal, Timerman notched her second of the night. Peters won the ball in the Titans defending third and sent a through ball which was all Timerman needed to beat the opposing center defender and keeper and earned IWU a comfortable 4-0 lead.

IWU added five more shots in the second half compared to Carroll's eight, for a final tally of 15-10, 6-2 on target. Dietrich stood strong and recorded two saves after 90 minutes of play as the Titan defense aided Dietrich in the shutout.

The Green and White return for the CCIW Tournament Championship game Saturday, Nov. 5 at Neis Field for a 3 p.m. kick off. The Titans will play the winner of the Wheaton College and North Central semifinals match to be concluded later this evening.
