Huber & Knutson Lead Titans Past Comets

Huber records a 27-point, 13-rebound double-double

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Stat-stuffing games from sophomore Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) and junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) led the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team to a 73-62 victory over Capital University at the Shirk Center Saturday afternoon, Nov. 19. The Titans won their home opener to improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Comets dipped to 2-1 on the year.

Huber went off for 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting, aided by seven free throws, while completing the double-double with a career-high 13 rebounds. Knutson tallied a career-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The junior transfer added seven rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end, to go along with three steals and a pair of assists. Senior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) added 12 points and a team-high four steals.

As a team, the Titans finished 24-for-70 from the floor, 3-for-23 from beyond the arc, and 22-for-33 at the free throw line. The Comets knocked down 22-of-57 shot attempts, 8-of-20 three-pointers, and 10-of-15 freebies.

IWU forced 30 CU turnovers, while committing just 16, leading to a 26-16 Titan advantage in points off turnovers. The Green and White matched Capital rebound-for-rebound as each team finished with 44, but used 22 offensive boards for a 21-14 edge in second chance points.

Illinois Wesleyan opened up a 5-0 advantage on a three-ball from sophomore Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva), but the Comets stormed back with a 12-2 run to move ahead, 12-7. Capital went on to control much of the first quarter, with a three-ball from freshman Laura Mahlum (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) cutting the Comets' lead to six, 20-14, after 10 minutes of action.

Mahlum's bucket, which came with 3:19 to play in the opening period, was followed by a Palmer dish to Knuston in transition in the second quarter. The fastbreak layup, which pulled the Titans within four, ended a five-minute scoring drought.

Capital extended its lead back to eight midway through the second, but jumpers from Huber and Knutson quickly pulled IWU within a basket, 27-25, with 3:49 to go in the half. Ultimately, Illinois Wesleyan closed the period on an 8-1 run as Heller found Knutson for a jumper with six seconds to go.

Leading 37-35 out of halftime, the Green and White never relinquished its lead. An and-one by Knutson and free throws from Huber gave IWU a game-best 13-point cushion midway through the third.

Capital rallied back though, trimming the Illinois Wesleyan edge to as few as one with a three-pointer in the fourth quarter. Clinging to a 59-58 lead with 6:58 to go, Huber knocked down a pair of buckets to give the Titans a bit of breathing room. Back-to-back jumpers from Huber were followed by an and-one from Heller to expand the Green and White lead to eight, 66-58.

Illinois Wesleyan never looked back from there, holding off Capital, 73-62.

The Titans hit the road Tuesday, Nov. 22, for a road tilt at Eureka College. Tipoff against the Red Devils is set for 7 p.m.
