Heartbreaking Loss at No. 13 UWL Brings Women’s Soccer Season to a Close

IWU finishes season with 11-5-3 record

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team saw its season come to a close in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday night, Nov. 12, as the Titans dropped a heartbreaker 1-0 loss to 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Illinois Wesleyan finishes the season, which was highlighted by a sweep of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular season and tournament titles, with an 11-5-3 overall record. UWL advances to the Sweet Sixteen with a record of 21-1-1.

The Eagles wasted little time as UW-La Crosse net what proved to be the game-winner just one minute and 38 seconds into the contest.

UWL's 1-nil lead stood into the final 15 minutes, where IWU saw three great chances but could not capitalize. A penalty kick found the post, and the ensuing rebound was saved by an Eagle defender sweeping through at the goal line at the last second. Moments later, the Titans produced another great opportunity, but a shot nicked the post to keep UWL's advantage intact.

Illinois Wesleyan finished the match with 11 shots, seven of which were on target, while UW-La Crosse recorded 19 shots with eight on goal. IWU manufactured four corners to UWL's three.

Sophomore keeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) finished the match with seven saves.

The loss marked the final games in the careers of Caelyn Steffens, Rachel White, Heather Dietrich, Madison Fischer, Maggie Peters, Riley Haug, Jenna Li, and Lauren Shanks
