Women’s Hoops Falls to No. 1 Hope

Mallory Powers named to all-tournament team

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start against No. 1 Hope College Saturday, Nov. 12, in the Hope Tipoff Tournament title game at DeVos Fieldhouse. IWU fell by a final tally of 99-73 to the defending national champions, dropping to 1-1 on the season.

Sophomore Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy), who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Green and White with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Powers added seven rebounds, an assist, and a block. Junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) went for a career-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while tacking on four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) and Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) tallied 14 and 11 points, respectively. Huber also hauled in a team-best nine rebounds and tallied four assists in a stat-stuffing showing.

As a team, IWU shot 40.3 percent from the field. The Titans hit 11-of-30 three-point tries, and went 8-for-14 at the free throw line. Hope connected on 52.1 percent of its shots, going 38-for-73 from the floor, and finished with 10 three-balls on 26 attempts. The Flying Dutch held a 46-35 rebounding advantage.

Illinois Wesleyan was especially slowed offensively in the opening quarter, as Hope took a 33-7 advantage into the second period. The Titans rebounded from there, outscoring the Flying Dutch, 14-13, over the next 10 minutes.

Trailing 46-21 out of halftime, Illinois Wesleyan appeared poised to pull off a historic comeback. An and-one by senior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) proved to be a catalyst for the Titans. Palmer followed with a triple on an assist from Huber, before Huber drilled a three-ball of her own. Buckets by Powers, Heller, and Knutson cut the Hope lead to 15, 53-38, with five minutes to go in the third.

Another triple, this one from Powers, and a jumper from Knutson got the Titans within 14 late in the period, but a three-ball with six seconds left gave the Flying Dutch a 71-53 lead into the final quarter.

Hope closed things out in the fourth, outscoring IWU by eight over the last 10 minutes of action, to send the Titans home with a 99-73 setback.

Illinois Wesleyan finishes up its three-game season-opening roadtrip Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
