Men’s Soccer Secures Second CCIW Victory Over Big Blue

Seaton and Nugent registered goals

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team continued its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin slate by playing host to Millikin University, Wednesday evening, Oct. 12 at Neis Field in Bloomington. The Green and White used two first half goals to secure the 2-1 victory over MU. With the win, the Titans' record upped to 5-6-2 (2-3-0 CCIW), while the Big Blue's record dipped to 0-8-3 (0-3-1 CCIW).

Illinois Wesleyan raced out to a welcomed 11th minute lead as junior Brody Seaton (Dunlap, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) found the back of the net to break the scoreboard with the 1-0 lead. On a free kick set piece by the Titans, the Big Blue attempted a clearance, but Seaton was in the right position to snag possession. Off of the ensuing steal, the Peoria Notre Dame, Ill. native laced a shot from just beyond the 18-yard box that escaped the keeper.

Sophomore Declan Nugent (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) tallied his first goal of the season in the 30th minute of action with a lengthy shot that stumped the keeper to extend the advantage to 2-0. The shot was sent from about 25-yards out with his right boot, sailed into the air, and landed right in the top half of the goal.

In the first 45, the Green and White outshot the Big Blue on a 17-3 clip that included eight shots on goal, compared to MU's one. Heading into the intermission, IWU earned a 2-0 lead.

The opening 20 minutes of the second frame saw back-and-forth action with Millikin generating the possession advantage.

In the 64th minute, the Big Blue was awarded a corner opportunity and took full advantage. Off of the corner, a Millikin player leaped and used his head to put MU within one as the score stood at 2-1 in favor of the home team.

With 15 minutes left, head coach Kyle Schauls deployed fresh legs by going to his bench for a handful of players. The move paid dividends as the Titan defensive line was able to withstand several late Millikin rushes.

In the end, freshman goalkeeper Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) picked up a loose ball with 10 ticks left to end the match as the Green and White picked up a much needed, 2-1, decision over the Big Blue.

The Titans outshot MU by a final tally of 22 (10 shots on frame) to 15 (five on target). IWU held the slim, 6-5, advantage in corner chances.

Senior Nico Thomas (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Bethany), Seaton, and freshman Joshua Cox (Encinitas, Calif.-Canyon Crest Academy) each notched two shots on goal.

Kedzior picked up his second career victory in goal by recording four saves on the evening.

The Green and White will make the trek to Chicago to tangle with No. 6 North Park for its next CCIW contest. The match is set for Saturday, Oct. 15 with a 7:30 p.m. first kick at Holmgren Athletic Complex on the campus of NPU.
