Women’s Tennis Splits Matches in Single-Day Duals

Titans secured its first win of the season against Principia

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team split its matches during a single-day doubleheader against Principia College and Greenville University Saturday, Sept. 18. The Titans took its first dual win of the season against Principia (0-1) 5-4 and fell to Greenville (3-3) 8-1 during match two. The Titans advanced to 1-4 on the year. 

In match one, IWU took wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles to put them at a 2-1 advantage before breaking into singles play. The pairings of senior Maria Poehls (Wauwatosa, Wis.-Wauwatosa West) and freshman Amber Shuang (Beijing, Beijing Normal U) won their set at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. 

At No. 3 doubles the duo of junior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) and freshman Marissa Hagler (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) overpowered the Panthers to win 8-1. Poehls and Shuang registered their first win this season as a pair, while Heller and Hagler took their second win of the season as a duo. 

The Titans went on to win at No. 4, 5, and 6 singles against Principia to secure the 5-4 win. Hellar, Hagler, and Poehls secured the three singles win for the Titans, respectively. Heller won with sets of 6-0 and 6-1 at No. 4 singles, Hagler took both sets 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and at No. 6 singles Poehls went 2-0 with scores of 7-6 (1-0) and 6-1. 

Against Greenville the Titans were short an athlete as the Panthers beat IWU 8-1. Poehls was credited with the solo point for the Green and White at No. 5 singles. The Wauwatosa, Wis. native took the match to three sets, but ended up on top with scores of 6-4, 4-6, and 11-9. 

The Titans will be back for a weekday matchup against College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponent Millikin University in Decatur, Ill. Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m.
