Men’s Soccer Stumbles in Season Opener

Titans outshot the Bears 12-10

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team fell 3-0 to Washington University in St. Louis Wednesday, Sept. 1 in its season opener. The Titans dropped to an overall record of  0-1, while the Bears climbed to 1-0. 

Senior goalkeeper Brett Sprengel (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Barrington) made three saves for the Green and White during the first half before senior goalkeeper Austin Woodside (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) stepped in for the second half of the match with one save recorded. 

Illinois Wesleyan saw two quick goals from WashU, as the Bears struck twice within the first 10 minutes. Around the 23 minute mark, the Bears found the back of the Titans' net to widen the lead 3-0. 

IWU was outshot, 7-6, in the first half, but outshot WashU, 6-3, in the second half. The Titans kept the Bears scoreless in the second half, but the deficit was too much as Illinois Wesleyan fell, 3-0.

IWU is back in action this Saturday, Sept. 4 at Aurora for a 1 p.m. scheduled start.
