Baseball Bested by No. 10 North Central

IWU returns to action Wednesday, May 12, as host to Carthage

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader against 10th-ranked North Central College Saturday, May 8, at Horenberger Field. IWU was edged 5-3 in game one and 11-0 in the nightcap.

IWU dropped to 16-19 overall and 11-16 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while NCC jumped to 29-6 and 23-4 in the CCIW.

Game One: North Central 5, Illinois Wesleyan 3
Junior Collin Elvers (Hamel, Ill.-Edwardsville) walked in the eighth on a wild pitch which brought home a run to tie the score at three all, but the Cardinals scored two in the ninth to top the Titans, 5-3.

Junior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI as Illinois Wesleyan finished with eight hits. Senior Dan Cerniglia (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) tallied IWU's other RBI in a 1-for-4 showing.

Senior Matt Blaney (Tinley Park, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) tossed seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out nine as the starter. Senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) threw the final two frames and was the pitcher of record.

Game Two: North Central 11, Illinois Wesleyan 0 (7 inn.)
The Cardinals came out hot in game two, scoring four runs in the first and five in the second to take control, 9-0. The Titans mustered just three hits, ultimately falling 11-0.

Juniors Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains), Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) and Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) each went 1-for-3 in the setback. 

On the mound, IWU used seven different pitchers, with each tossing an inning a piece. Senior Colin Pfotenhauer (Lemont, Ill.-Marist) and freshman Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) each threw 1-2-3 innings in relief.

Illinois Wesleyan remains at home for a midweek matchup with Carthage Wednesday, May 12. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Horenberger Field.
