Steffens' Brace Fuels Titans to Win at Millikin

Steffens scores twice, White adds insurance goal

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team defeated Millikin University 3-1 in its midweek matchup Wednesday, April 7. With a few exhibitions under their belt to this point, Wednesday's victory moved IWU to 1-0 on the year. Millikin dropped to 0-1 in countable contests.

The Titans were led by junior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) who put up the first goal of the game with an assist from junior Angelina Kosmas (Palos Park, Ill.-A.A. Stagg) to take a 1-0 lead just four minutes in. Steffens did not stop after one, registering her second goal of the night on an assist by sophomore Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) finishing the half 2-0 Titans.

To round out the Green and White scoring, junior Rachel White (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) scored an unassisted goal leading to a 3-0 Titan lead. Millikin cut the Titan lead to two, 3-1, in the 88th minute of the match but it was too little, too late as Illinois Wesleyan ran away victorious.

IWU's defense kept MU to a total of two shots on goal, as junior keeper Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) registered one save.

The Titans get ready for two exhibition matches against Augustana College Thursday, April 15 and North Central College Saturday, April 17, before facing Millikin again Wednesday, April 21 at 7 p.m. in Bloomington.
