Eighth Inning Rally Lifts Baseball to Win Over NPU

Titans scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - An eighth-inning rally lifted the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team to a 6-4 win over North Park University in the series finale Saturday, April 3, at Horenberger Field. The Titans improved to 10-9 on the season and 5-6 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while North Park saw its record evened up at 8-8 (3-8 CCIW).

IWU cranked out 12 hits in the game. Freshman Nick Pratscher (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) went 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored, while sophomore Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) and junior Jack Schneider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) added two hits apiece. Junior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) drove in two, with Prastcher, junior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley), and freshman Evan Hutston (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) tallying one RBI each.

Senior Hunter Simon (Verona, Ill.-Seneca) started the game on the mound and went seven innings with 11 strikeouts. Senior Nick Watson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) threw two scoreless innings in relief to notch his first win of the season.

Illinois Wesleyan opened the scoring with a RBI single from Pratscher in the second, but saw North Park tie things up at one in the top of the fourth.

The Green and White got the run back on Greer's sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead, an advantage the Titans would carry into the eighth inning.

The Vikings used a bases-loaded double to take their first lead of the game, 4-2, in the top of the eighth.

After a run scored on an error, Greer laced a double to left center to even the score at four all. Ranneklev and Hutson came up with back-to-back sacrifice flies to give IWU a 6-4 lead with NPU down to its final three outs.

In the ninth, the Vikings made things interesting, drawing a two-out walk and singling to bring the winning-run to the plate, but Watson worked his way out of it to hang on for the 6-4 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action in one week, as the Titans travel to Kenosha, Wis. for a three-game series at Carthage College Saturday-Sunday, April 10-11. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m., with Sunday's game scheduled for a noon start.
