Women's Soccer Sinks Big Blue in Season Finale

Titans hold perfect 2-0 record

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team claimed a 3-0 victory over Millikin University in its final game of the 2020 campaign Wednesday night, April 21. The Titans finished with a perfect 2-0 countable record, as both victories were against the Big Blue as Millikin fell to 0-2 in its countable record to wrap up their season.

The Titans trailed early on a Big Blue goal just eight minutes into the game, despite a flurry of shots by IWU.

Junior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) headed the ball past the Big Blue keeper to tie the game 1-1, with three minutes left into the half to put the Titans on the board. Steffens met the ball in the air from a cross by sophomore Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) to end the half tied at one.

In the second half, junior Heather Dietrich (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo) crossed in a ball to find Shanks at the end of it, to take the first Titan lead of the game, 2-1.

Around the 84th minute freshman Anny Mitra (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) powered in an insurance goal for the Green and White to widen the lead 3-1. Shanks added to her stat line and picked up her second helper of the night in her assist to Mitra.

IWU kept the ball in the attacking half, forcing the MU goalkeeper to make 12 saves off of 15 shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Kelli McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.-Cathedral Catholic) kept Millikin scoreless for the remainder of the match, facing a total of four shots on goal and made three saves to aid the Titans to the win.
