Women's Hoops Halted in CCIW Tournament Championship at Millikin

Titans finish season with 6-4 record

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team saw its season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion, as the Titans fell 72-59 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championship at Millikin University Tuesday night, March 9.

Illinois Wesleyan, the fourth seed in the tournament, finishes the season with a 6-4 record. Millikin lifted its record to 11-3.

Senior Kendall Sosa (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led the Titans with 20 points in her final game donning the Green and White. Also finishing in double figures were seniors Samantha Munroe (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) and Anna Lowis (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin). Munroe scored 13 points, including four triples, while Lowis added 10 points and five rebounds. IWU's final senior, Riley Brovelli (Oglesby, Ill.-LaSalle-Peru) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Titans jumped out a 9-3 lead as Munroe found Lowis for a layup with five minutes to go, but the Big Blue clawed back to even the score at 15 all after one quarter.

In the second period, junior Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) turned Millikin over on back-to-back possessions. After taking it herself to tie the game at 26, she found Sosa for a triple to put IWU in front 29-26 into halftime.

Illinois Wesleyan extended its lead to five, 39-34, on a Munroe three-pointer with 5:55 remaining in the period. Millikin went on to close the frame on an 8-2 run to take a 46-43 edge into the fourth.

The Big Blue's six-point cushion remained intact with 6:12 to go. A quick five-point spurt on a Sosa layup and Munroe triple cut the deficit to one 57-56, a minute later, but that was as close as the Titans would get.

Millikin closed the game on a 15-3 run, as Illinois Wesleyan fell 72-59.

The game marked the final in the careers of Riley Brovelli, Anna Lowis, Samantha Munroe, and Kendall Sosa. Collectively, the senior class is responsible for countless IWU records, led the Titans to three CCIW Tournament Championships, 74 wins, and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
