BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team continued its perfect record with a 5-3 win over Elmhurst University Saturday, March 27 at Neis Field. The Titans are 2-0 as Elmhurst moves to 0-1.
In a rainy match the Titans took charge in a balanced effort win over the Blue Jays. Five different Titans registered goals including
Zack Kokes (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central),
Sasha Tylnyy (Wheeling, Ill.-Buffalo Grove),
Keagan James (Kokomo, Ind.-Kokomo),
Trevor Martin (San Diego, Calif.-At. Augustine), and
Joshua Cohen (Wheaton, Ill.-Glenbard South).
Three minutes into the game, the Blue Jays came out with a quick goal to take the 1-0 lead. The Titans came back with a goal from Naperville, Ill. native, Kokes with an assisted pass from
Dorian Lesiuk (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd) tying the game, 1-1.
Kokes kicked off a four-goal unanswered run for the Green and White as freshman Tynlyy collected his first career goal as a Titan and broke the tie to take the 2-1 lead. Fellow freshman
CJ Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, Calif.-Dos Pueblos) was credited with the assist to end the half.
The second half started with goals from James and Martin to widen the lead 4-1 IWU. The Blue Jays broke the streak closing the gap 4-2. Freshman Cohen quickly answered, just two minutes later, picking up his first career goal with an assist from Rodriguez.
A late goal effort was not enough for the Blue Jays as IWU took the 5-3 win.
The Titans return to the pitch for a scrimmage against North Park University Monday, March 29 before making the trip to Kenosha, Wis. to face Carthage College in an official match Saturday, April 3.
