Gudaitis Complete Game Fuels Baseball to Win Over Bluejays

Gudaitis fanned 14 in complete game performance

WHEATON, Ill. - A stellar performance by senior Quinn Gudaitis (Arlington Heights, Ill.-John Hersey) along with timely hits gave the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team a 4-1 win over Elmhurst University in the weekend's rubber match Sunday, March 21, at Wheaton College's Pfund Field. IWU improved to 7-5 overall, 2-2 in CCIW play with the win.

In a complete game showing, Gudaitis struck out a season-high 14, while allowing just three hits and one run. His 14 Ks were a career-best and rank tied for seventh-most in IWU single-game history. They were also the most by a Titan since Nick Brune fanned 14 versus SUNY-Purchase on March 14, 2019.

Illinois Wesleyan outhit Elmhurst 12-3 in the contest. Junior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) led IWU with a team-high three hits, while also scoring a run. Junior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) and freshmen Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) and Will Kafer (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) tallied two hits and one RBI each.

Elmhurst took the lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first and maintained a 1-0 edge into the fourth.

Ranneklev led the Titans half of the fourth off with a single. He quickly moved into third on a wild pitch and throwing error, making way for Cyrus' RBI knock. After a groundout moved Cyrus to second, Kafer brought him home on a single up the middle to give IWU a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) tacked on an insurance run with a RBI single through the right side in the eighth, and Mutter scored on a wild pitch in the ninth to give IWU a 4-1 cushion.

Gudaitis showed no signs of slowing down in the ninth, as he promptly struck out the side to preserve the 4-1 IWU win.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to Horenberger Field Wednesday, March 24, for a midweek matchup with Millikin University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
