Baseball's Late Inning Rally Falls Short in CCIW Opener

Titans fall to 5-4 on the year

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team came up short 2-1 in its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener against North Park University Tuesday afternoon, March 16, at Horenberger Field. With the loss, Illinois Wesleyan dropped to 5-4 overall and North Park improved to 5-0.

Neither side mustered much offense as the Titans and Vikings finished with five hits apiece. No player on either side recorded more than one hit. IWU left seven on base, while NPU stranded 14.

Senior Quinn Gudaitis (Arlington Heights, Ill.-John Hersey) tossed the first five innings, striking out seven as the pitcher of record. Cooper Kraft (Morton, Ill.-Morton) struck out three and did not allow a hit in two scoreless innings in relief.

The game was scoreless through four, before North Park made the most of two hits and an error in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs for NPU's Stevanovic. A timely single to left paired with an error scored two to put the Vikings in front 2-0.

Illinois Wesleyan got a run back in the sixth as Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) led off the frame with a single to left. After swiping second, he moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

IWU threatened in each of the next three innings, but stranded a combined six on base without anything to show for it in a tight 2-1 loss.

Illinois Wesleyan looks to bounce back this weekend, March 20-21, when it battles the Bluejays of Elmhurst University in a four-game series. The set gets underway with a doubleheader at Horenberger Field Saturday, March 20, at 12 p.m., before the teams square off in Elmhurst, Ill. on Sunday, March 21.
