Women’s Hoops Stymies George Fox

Titans force 32 turnovers, tally 21 steals

NEWBERG, Ore. - A stifling defensive effort by the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team lifted the Titans to a gritty 65-61 win at George Fox University Thursday night, Dec. 30. The Titans moved to 6-5 on the season with the win, while the Bruins stumbled to 4-7.

Freshman Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) led the Green and White with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3-for-4 from deep. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) added 15 points, six assists, and five steals in a stat-stuffing showing, while freshmen Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) and Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) tallied 10 points apiece.

As a team, IWU went 25-for-63 from the field and 8-for-25 from three-point range. George Fox finished 23-for-47 from the field (48.9 percent), 8-for-20 (40 percent) from three-point distance, and 7-for-10 from the free throw line.

Despite the Bruins edge in shooting efficiency, the Titans forced 32 turnovers to which they converted into 22 points. IWU also held a slim 28-26 edge in points in the paint, and a 17-6 advantage in fast break points. Illinois Wesleyan racked up 21 steals, with Lansford and Catie Eck's (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) snagging five each and Huber swiped four.

George Fox, which led by as many as eight in the first half, led 41-39 with 6:38 to go in the third quarter, before an and-one by Lansford got the Titans going. Huber followed with a pull-up jumper of her own, to turn the table and put IWU up 44-41.

Eck's free throws and another jumper from Huber boosted the Titans' lead to six, 48-42. The Bruins closed the third quarter with five straight points to take a 50-49 lead into the final period.

Palmer began the fourth quarter with a triple and fellow Powers added a layup to push IWU ahead, 55-49.

Another GF five-point run trimmed the lead to one, but Lansford answered with a triple on Palmer's assist. A Powers three-ball gave Illinois Wesleyan the lead for good, to kick off the Green and White's west coast trip with a 65-61 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan continues its trip out west with a New Year's Eve game against Pacific University tomorrow, Dec. 31. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT.
