Men’s Soccer Bounced in CCIW Tournament Semifinals

Titans conclude season with 6-9-1 record

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team was upended in the semifinal round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Wednesday night, Nov. 3, at North Central College. The third-seeded Titans (6-9-1, 5-3 CCIW) struck first but ultimately fell to the Cardinals (16-1-1), 2-1.

Illinois Wesleyan used a set piece opportunity to find the game's first goal in the 24th minute. Junior Dane Hoare (Chicago, Ill.-Von Steuben) served a corner into the middle of the box, where senior Trevor Martin (San Diego, Calif.-St. Augustine) soared above his North Central mark and headed it in to put IWU in front, 1-nil.

The Cardinals found the equalizer eight minutes later, to send the game into halftime tied at 1-1.

In the second half, the Titans pieced together a pair of chances in the first 20 minutes of the period. Dorian Lesiuk (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd) fired off a shot in the 50th minute but it was saved, and senior Donovan Malone (Houston, Texas-St. Pius X) broke through for another chance in the 64th minute. Malone put a shot up and right, but NCC's Sid Marquardt made the stop.

North Central created its own opportunities in the early goings of the half, but freshman Ethan Fineman (Highland Park, Ill.-Highland Park) came up with a trio of saves to keep the 1-1 tie intact.

With just over 10 minutes to play, the Cardinals broke through for the game-winner. Brandon Harmsen played a ball to Jaziel Enriquez for the go-ahead goal with 10:04 left on the clock.

Fineman finished the match with a career-high nine saves, as NCC held a 24-10 upperhand in shots and an 11-4 edge in shots on target.

The Green and White pressed from that point on, but could not find the back of the net. With the setback, Illinois Wesleyan finishes the season with a 6-9-1 overall record.
