ST. LOUIS. Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan University football team fell to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponent Washington University in St. Louis Oct. 9, by a final score of 38-22. With this defeat, IWU's record drops to 1-4 (1-3 CCIW) while WashU's record improves to 3-2 (3-1 CCIW).  

The Titans and Bears were tied 14-14 after the first 30 minutes of action. In the second half, WashU outscored the Green and White 24-8 to secure the 38-22 victory.

Less than four minutes into the opening frame, WashU struck first with a one-yard touchdown run to make the score 7-0. However, IWU came storming down the field and quickly tied the game at 7 less than two minutes later. Sophomore quarterback Sage Shinder (Chicago, Ill. - Walter Payton) connected with senior receiver Wesley Watson (Carmel, Ind. - Carmel) for a 58 yard touchdown pass. Junior Andrew Stange (Lake Zurich, Ill. - Lake Zurich) completed the score with the extra point. 

WashU would tack on another touchdown in the middle of the first quarter to take a 14-7 lead. In the second quarter, senior running back Hamid Bullie (Chicago, Ill. - Loyola Academy) capped off a 12 play drive with a one yard touchdown run to even the score at 14 apiece. The teams went into the locker room tied at 14. 

The Bears came out of the locker room and scored 14 unanswered points to take a commanding 28-14 lead heading into the final quarter. 

The fourth quarter saw WashU add to its lead by scoring twice more to make it 28 unanswered points. However, the Titans offense would find the endzone once more with 4:13 to go. Senior tight end Zack Tencza (Frankfort, Ill. - Lincoln-Way East) was on the receiving end of a Shindler seven-yard touchdown pass. Schindler added a two-point conversion to make the score 38-22.

Schindler completed 19 of his 30 pass attempts that led to 264-yards of offense through the air accompanied by two touchdown passes and two interceptions. 

Bullie rushed for a team-high 101 yards that included one touchdown run. Senior Anthony Marre (Bloomingdale, Ill. - Glenbard North) rushed for 41 yards while sophomore Seth Albin (Midlothian, Ill. - Oak Forest) added 30 rushing yards.

Zack Tencza had 113 receiving yards that was highlighted by a 58-yard touchdown snag. Watson accumulated 81 yards through the air while junior Charlie Hamilton (Springfield, Ill. - Sacred Heart-Griffin) captured 40 yards receiving. 

Defensively, sophomore Connor Nigro (Lisle, Ill. - Lisle) and Skyler Metzger (Northbrook, Ill. - Glenbrook North) led the way for the Titans with nine tackles each. Metzger added one sack for a seven yard loss. Senior Daniel Gibbons (Elmhurst, Ill. - IC Catholic Prep) notched eight tackles while recording 0.5 sacks. Junior Connor Murphy (Aurora, Ill. - Metea Valley) racked up a team high 1.5 sacks to go along with his five tackles.  

Illinois Wesleyan captured a slight edge in first downs (23-21). WashU enjoyed 513 yards of total offense, compared to the Titans 424. 

The Green and White will return home to continue its CCIW slate Saturday, Oct. 16 as Millikin University comes to Tucci Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
