Women’s Tennis Soars Over Bluejays, 7-2

Titans grabbed first CCIW win this season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team defeated Elmhurst University 7-2 in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin dual Saturday, Oct. 2. The Titans are 2-6 (1-4 CCIW) while Elmhurst fell to 1-4 (0-4 CCIW) on the year. 

The Titans took wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles to give them the 2-0 advantage walking into singles play. At No. 2 doubles the pairing of Amber Shuang (Beijing-Beijing Normal U) and Katelyn Heller ( Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) took their second-straight doubles win as a duo, 8-0. Freshman Marissa Hagler (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal West) and senior Maria Poehls (Wauwatosa, Wis.-Wauwatosa West) picked up their first win as partners with a 8-2 win.

During singles play, the Titans won all but one match securing their first CCIW win this season. At No. 1 singles Shuang beat Elmhurst's Julia Kostatinova with scores of 6-0 and 6-1 marking her first solo-dual win of the year. 

Seniors Anna Cooper ( Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) and Ashley Mohr ( Morton, Ill.-Morton) took wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Cooper secured the Titans point with scores of 6-2 and 6-0. Mohr, at No. 3 singles, swept Bluejays' Via Barack, 6-2 and 6-4. 

At No. 4 singles, Heller took her match to three sets. The junior went down 6-4 in the first set before coming back to take the match with scores of 6-1 and 10-4. 

The final Titan point went to senior Poehls at No. 6 singles, the Wauwatosa, Wis. native won with scores of 6-4 and 6-2. 

IWU is back on the court next Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 9-10 for two CCIW duals against Carthage College and Carroll University, respectively. The Titans are scheduled to host the two teams at 10 a.m. on both days.
