Women’s Tennis Tops Vikings

IWU secures No. 7 seed in next week’s CCIW Tournament

CHICAGO - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team locked up the No. 7 seed and a bye into the quarterfinals of next week's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament with a 6-3 win over North Park University Saturday, Oct. 16. Illinois Wesleyan's record now stands at 3-8 (2-6 CCIW), while North Park stumbled to 3-8 (1-7 CCIW).

The Titans claimed wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles, while they were also victorious at No. 1, 2, 4, and 6 singles. Freshman Amber Shuang (Beijing, Ill.-Beijing Normal U) and junior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles to move to 4-1 as a pairing on the year. Shaung went on to take a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Heller rallied for a win at No. 4 singles. Heller took the opening set 7-5, but dropped the second by a 6-3 tally. She rebounded to claim the match with a 6-3 score in the final set. 

At No. 1 doubles, seniors Ashley Mohr (Morton, Ill.-Morton) and Anna Cooper (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Prospect) won 8-4. Cooper added a win at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Senior Maria Poehls (Wauwatosa, Wis.-Wauwatosa West) edged her competition at No. 6 singles, coming out on top 6-2 and 6-1.

With the win, IWU will now return to action Thursday, Oct. 21, when the Titans take on No. 2-seeded Millikin University in Hanover Park, Ill. in the opening round of the CCIW Tournament. First serve is scheduled for approximately 3 p.m.
