PINEHURST, N.C. - Rising senior Rob Wuethrich (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and rising junior Jimmy Morton (Sugar Grove, Ill.-Marmion Academy) of the Illinois Wesleyan University men's golf team have been chosen to compete in the 120th Annual North and South Amateur Golf Championships at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, June 30-July 4. Wuethrich and Morton, who earned an invitation due to their Golfstat end of season rankings, are the first Titans to compete in the event since Conner O'Neil in 2018.
One of the longest running national amateur championships in America, having been played every year since 1901, the North and South 120-man field is composed of the elite of the elite in amateur golf. Wuethrich and Morton were two of 10 NCAA Division III invitees. An invitational tournament, participants are chosen based upon their performance in national amateur championships and overall competitive record. Â
Wuethrich finished the year ranked No. 1 in Division III according to Golfstat. A finalist for the Division III Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award, he won four tournaments in a shortened season, earning top honors at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Preview, Gordin Collegiate Classic, Golfweek Fall Preview, and the Tim Kopka Memorial Tournament. With 11 rounds of par-or-better, Wuethrich was also named PING First Team All-America and Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-America.
Morton, who earned the lone CCIW Golfer of the Week honor of the season, finished the season slotted No. 10 in the Division III Golfstat rankings. He racked up four top-10 finishes, highlighted by a pair of third-place finishes. Morton tied for third at the prestigious Gordin Collegiate Classic, before claiming third outright at the Division I Orlando Invitational.
