Fourth Quarter Comeback Gives Men's Lacrosse Win Over Washington College

The Titans trailed by five with nine minutes to play

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - A seven-goal fourth quarter by the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team gave the Titans a 13-12 come-from-behind win over Washington College Wednesday afternoon, March 11, at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium. The win propelled IWU to 5-2 on the season, while WC dropped to 0-6 on the year.

The Shoremen scored the game's first four goals before freshman Carson Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) opened up IWU's scoring with 2:35 to go in the opening period. WC responded with a tally on the ensuing faceoff and freshman Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) net a goal moments later to cut the Shoremen lead to 5-2 through one quarter.

Washington College pushed its lead back to four in the second period, but Illinois Wesleyan scored twice to cut the deficit to two, 8-6, at halftime.

A relatively quiet third quarter saw just two goals, both by the Shoremen, to give WC a four-goal cushion with 15 minutes to play.

After a goal by Carson Kiichle, Washington College net back-to-back goals to take its largest lead of the game, 12-7, with just under 10 minutes remaining. Facing its largest deficit of the afternoon, IWU rattled off five unanswered goals to even the score at 12 all with 3:43 left in regulation.

With the clock winding down under a minute, freshman Blake Muschewske (Exelsior, Minn.-Holy Family Catholic) caused a turnover and senior Patrick Murphy (Palatine, Ill.-St. Viator) scooped up the ground ball to get the Titans out for the clear. Illinois Wesleyan used the clock to its advantage as Connor Kiichle scored with nine seconds to go. WC won the final face off but turned it over and Muschewske chased down the ground ball to secure the 13-12 win.

Junior Will Harris (Bloomington, Minn.-Holy Angels) made 14 saves in goal, while Muschewske aided his defensive efforts with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.Sophomore Zac Taylor (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton) was also strong for the Titans, winning 11 face offs and picking up a team-high seven ground balls.

Carson Kiichle led the scoring with five goals and senior Wil Laidlaw (Breckenridge, Colo.-Summit) added three. Connor Kiichle scored two, while senior Danny Lowe (Woodburry, Minn.-East Ridge), sophomore Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East), and senior Ty Collins (West Chicago, Ill.-Wheaton Academy) contributed one apiece. Connor Kiichle led the Titans with four assists, and Smith, Collins, and sophomore Paul Mucci (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Bloomfield Hills) recorded one each.
