Strong Second Half Leads Titans Past Bishops, 14-11

Rick Smith and Carson Kiichle registered four goals apiece

DELAWARE, Ohio – A second-half offensive explosion propelled the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team to a 14-11 come-from-behind victory over Ohio Wesleyan University at Selby Stadium Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22. The gritty win moved the Titans to 1-1 overall, while the Bishops dropped their record to 0-2 on the year.

Illinois Wesleyan trailed 8-4 with 11:53 to go in the third quarter, before a goal by junior Max Bousky (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) proved to be the Titans' catalyst just six seconds later. Beginning with the third-quarter tally by Bousky, IWU scored 10 straight goals to take command, 14-8. The Bishops chipped away at the deficit with a trio of goals in the final four minutes, but Illinois Wesleyan held them off for a 14-11 gritty road win.

Sophomore Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East), freshman Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview), juniors Jake Simpson (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) and Nick Ceko (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington), freshman Carson Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview), Bousky, and freshman Logan Heinchon (Dripping Springs, Texas-Dripping Springs) provided the firepower for IWU. Smith and Connor Kiichle tallied four goals each, while Simpson added two goals and an assist. Carson Kiichle finished with one goal and two assists and senior Danny Lowe (Woodbury, Minn.-East Ridge) recorded a helper as well.

The Titans racked up a 46-32 edge in shots, including a 28-20 advantage in shots on target. Illinois Wesleyan also led in ground balls, 39 to 27, and face offs, 21 to 7. Junior Will Harris (Bloomington, Minn.-Holy Angels) recorded nine saves en route to earning the win in goal.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to action at Tucci Stadium Wednesday night, Feb. 26, when the Titans play host to Aurora University. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
