My Story Matters: A Student-Athlete's Perspective

NCAA Diversity and Inclusion week got underway Tuesday, Oct. 27

10/27/2020 1:24:00 PM

The NCAA's third annual Diversity and Inclusion week takes place Oct. 27-29. As part of the first day of the campaign, "My Story Matters," IWU athletics will share the stories of Titan student-athletes, coaches, and administrators, exploring their identities, perspectives, and experiences.

Through the campaign IWU athletics encourages student-athletes, administrators, coaches, and fans across the country to use their platform to engage in a discussion about and promote diversity and inclusion. The goal of the campaign is to use social media to create a dialogue surrounding diversity and inclusion and to communicate the need and benefit of creating inclusive environments.

My Story Matters: A Student-Athlete's Perspective

I was pulled over on the highway and I was not speeding. The cop walked up to my window and told me to get out of the car. Patted me down for a weapon then put me in the cop car where a police dog was barking at me the entire time. He then searched my whole car. When he came back he looked all into who my father was and what his job was and where he went to college. My dad is a black man. He did not ask about my mother. She is white. When I asked for the reason I was pulled over, he told me it is illegal in Indiana to have a frame on my license plate. My mom later called the Indiana Secretary of State office. It is not illegal to have a frame on your license plate in Indiana.
