KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A golden goal off the foot of Logan Servin (Milton, Wis.-Milton HS) in double overtime pushed the Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team past Kalamazoo College Saturday night, Aug. 31, at MacKenzie Field. Senior Alex Ruckstaetter (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West HS) made a career-high 10 saves in the win.
A physical game that saw the two teams combine for 32 fouls and six cautions was tied at nil-nil into the second half.
Freshman Dane Hoare (Chicago, Ill.-Von Steuben HS) slipped a pass through to sophomore Zack Kokes (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central HS) who buried a shot to open the scoring in the 74th minute.
Holding a one-goal edge, the Titans thwarted a series of runs by the Hornets, before the aggressive play resulted in man advantage for the Hornets. Kalamazoo cashed in on the advantage with the equalizer in the 88th minute to force overtime.
After a scoreless first extra period, senior Josh Essary (League City, Texas-Clear Springs HS) connected with Servin for the game-winning goal I the 108th minute to give the Titans their first victory of the year.
Illinois Wesleyan looks to make it two in-a-row Wednesday night, Sept. 4, when IWU hosts Aurora University. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Neis Field.
