ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The No. 4-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team lost a 1-0 verdict to Washington U. before holding on to get a 3-2 win over No. 8-ranked Coe College in games at the Schutt Invitational II on Saturday, March 23, at the WashU Softball Field.
Illinois Wesleyan is now 7-2 this spring while WashU improved to 6-6 and Coe is now 17-2.
Against Coe, the Titans scored single runs in the first on a home run by junior shortstop
Sam Berghoff, in the fourth on an RBI double from senior third baseman
Julie Josten, and in the seventh on a single by junior
Mia Massaro that scored Josten, who had two of the Titans' eight hits. Junior second baseman
Shelby Fulk also had two singles.
Junior
Brea Walker (4-1) got the pitching decision, hurling six complete innings, allowing seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Walker was tagged for two runs on four hits and a walk from the first five hitters in the bottom of the seventh and departed with the bases loaded and no one out. Junior
Ally Wiegand came in to relieve and got a strikeout, a fly out and another strikeout to end the threat and earn the save.
Wiegand (3-1) allowed only four hits (three of them doubles) and struck out 15 in a hard-luck loss to the Bears in game one of the day. The 15 Ks is the second most in a game for Wiegand in her career behind her school-record of 17 vs. Carthage last year.
Taylor Arends broke up a scoreless game in the sixth when she hit a double to right field to score Amy Walsh, who had doubled off the center field wall with one out.
Josten, Fulk and junior leftfielder
Brittany Murphy each had two hits as the Titans stranded 10 hitters, including three in the last of the seventh.
