O'FALLON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team opened its 2019 season with a pair of wins, defeating Greenville University by scores of 6-3 and 12-2 in games played at the O'Fallon (Ill.) Family Sports Park on Wednesday, Feb. 27.
The Panthers slipped to 4-4 this season.
In game one, IWU scored three in the sixth inning and added one run in the seventh and two in the ninth. Junior second baseman
Jeran Simpson cracked a home run and had two runs batted in while junior first baseman
Garrett Shea had a double with a run batted in and senior third baseman
Stephen Billington and junior ceterfielder
Nick Figus each rapped doubles.
Sophomore
Dan Trudeau got the pitching victory in middle relief and senior
Nick Brune earned a save by tossing 1 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.
The Titans had seven extra base hits among their 17 hits in the nightcap. Figus had four hits with two triples while junior shortstop
Brandon Skopick added three hits. Senior catcher
Seth Palmby had two hits with a two-run double and Shea also had two hits in the win.
Freshman
Evan Daly threw three innings to earn the pitching decision, allowing one unearned run on a hit with a walk and two strikeouts. Six Titan pitchers limited the Panthers to six hits.
What's Next?
If weather cooperates, Illinois Wesleyan is set to play on Saturday in Greenville, Ill., with games against Central (Iowa) at 12:30 p.m. and Greenville at 4 p.m. with a single game scheduled on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Central (Iowa), also in Greenville.
