Edington's Brace Lifts IWU Past NCC 2-1 in OT

IWU outshot North Central 25-9

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team came out victorious over North Central College in a 2-1 overtime match Wednesday evening, Oct. 9, at Neis Field. The Titans are now 6-5-0 after the victory, with a 1-1-0 record in CCIW play.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first half, but senior Flower Edington (Wilmette, Ill.-New Trier Township HS) put in a goal in the 71st minute off sophomore Heather Dietrich's (Geneseo, Ill.-Geneseo HS) pass to break the scoreless deadlock. North Central responded in the 89th minute with a goal of its own to make the score 1-1 and force extra time.

In the overtime period, Edington once again found the back of the net, this time for the golden goal in the 95th minute.  Collecting a feed from junior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) near the top of the 18, the Wilmette, Ill. native fired a shot in the net off the upper right part of the crossbar. Edington's brace was her first multi-goal game since notching two against Franklin College, Sept. 19, 2018.

IWU held the advantage over North Central in shots (25 to 9), shots on goal (11 to 5), and corners (8 to 1). Senior Ellie Crabtree (Springfield, Ill.-Edwardsville HS) and sophomore Erin Peck (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton St. Francis HS) led all IWU players with four shots each. Sophomore Maria Fields (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East HS) saved four shots on goal to continue her strong play as goalkeeper for the Titans.

The Titans travel to Chicago to play CCIW nemesis North Park University Saturday, Oct. 12. The match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
