Illinois Wesleyan Women Suffer Setback at Wheaton, 58-52

WHEATON, Ill. -- After being outscored in the third quarter by 11 points, a late comeback fell short as the No. 13-ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team lost a 58-52 decision to Wheaton College at King Arena in Wheaton, Ill., on Thursday, Jan. 31.

The loss gives IWU an overall record of 16-4 and a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin mark of 9-2 while the Thunder improved to 11-1 in the conference and 17-4 overall.

A season-low shooting percentage of .265 from the field (18 of 68) doomed the Titans, who also connected on just three of 15 3-point efforts (.200). Illinois Wesleyan saw a 32-28 halftime lead disappear when Wheaton outscored IWU, 21-10, in the third quarter to take a 49-42 lead heading into the final period. Neither team scored more than 10 points in the game's final 10 minutes.

Sophomore Raven Hughes led IWU with 12 points with sophomore Kendall Sosa the only other Titan in double figures with 10. Senior Ashley Schneider paced IWU with nine rebounds as the teams were even at 44-44 in boards. The three Titan seniors - Maddie Merritt, Ashley Schneider and Nina Anderson - combined to go three for 26 (.115) from the field.

Hannah Frazier's 18 points led Wheaton, who prevailed despite committing 22 turnovers to 16 for IWU. The Thunder shot .396 from the field (21 of 53), well below their season mark of .421.
