BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The No. 18-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team split with Carroll University on Saturday, April 21, falling 4-0 in game one and defeating the Pioneers by a final score of 10-0 in game two. Five players recorded multi-hit games for the Titans in game two.
Following a sweep, Illinois Wesleyan moved to 19-8 on the season with a 9-1 record in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Carroll is now 18-10 overall and 6-2 in CCIW action.
In game one, IWU received just four hits from their line-up with two coming from sophomore
Sam Berghoff. Senior
Mackenzie Marquis (4-3) was the losing pitcher, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs (one unearned).
Carroll received a solid effort in the circle from Amanda Osterhus who pitched a complete game shutout allowing just four hits and striking out 11. Veronica Rodriguez put the Pioneers ahead 4-0 with a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
In game two, sophomore
Ally Wiegand (9-2) earned the win pitching 4.0 innings, allowing two hits, and striking out six. IWU's bats were hot early as the Titans scored twice in the first inning. Berghoff doubled home junior
Jillian Runyon and later scored on a single off the bat of sophomore
Shelby Fulk.
Illinois Wesleyan exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning, capped off by a three-run home run from junior
Julie Josten. Sophomore
Sydney Alery, senior
Maggie Graham, sophomore
Kara Bischoff, and Wiegand were also responsible for RBI's in the fourth.
Runyon, Fulk, Bischoff, and Josten each recorded two hits during game two. Sophomore
Brea Walker also pitched in game two, allowing no hits in one inning of work.
Lexy Kemnitzer (8-5) was the losing pitcher in game two after she allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs over 3.2 innings pitched.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Titans are back in action on Sunday, April 22, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against No. 22-ranked North Central College. North Central owns a 23-3 record this season and are 7-1 in CCIW competition. The Cardinals are led on offense by Emily Miller who is hitting .523 this season with 14 RBI. In the circle the Cardinals are led by Sarah Esposito's 1.70 earned run average.
