Titan Baseball Loses in Ninth Inning, 7-6, to Babson

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Babson College baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to hand Illinois Wesleyan a 7-6 setback on Friday, March 16, in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Field in Auburndale, Fla.

The Titans are now 7-3 this season while the Beavers improved to 3-1.

After going 9-for-13 the day before, the 2-3-4 hitters in IWU's Friday lineup were 9-for-14 as junior leftfielder John Bosco, sophomore centerfielder Nick Figus and senior third baseman Gino Cavalieri each had three hits. Bosco had the Titans' only extra-base hit of the 13 hits the team had.

With the score tied at 3-3, the Titans took a lead with three runs in the top of the eighth. With one out, Jacob Houghton singled to left and sophomore shortstop Brandon Skopick reached on an error to send Houghton to third. Bosco's double to left center brought home one run and Figus had a run-scoring single to center, scoring Skopick. After Cavalieri lined out, Bosco scored on a fielding error.

Freshman starting pitcher Eric Bennes went five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and freshman Brady Hough threw three scoreless frames, allowing one hit with two walks and a strikeout. Freshman Hunter Simon (2-1) was touched for four runs on four hits in 1/3 of an inning in the ninth.
