26-Goal Output Gets Men's Lacrosse Past Wittenberg; IWU Fires off School-Record 103 Shots

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Five goals from senior James Maibuecher and four each from freshman Tanner Nelson and sophomore Alex Doorenbos helped the Illinois Wesleyan men's lacrosse team to a 26-12 win over Wittenberg University at Tucci Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 25.

The Titans, who fired off a school-record 103 shots, improved to 2-0 this season. The old school mark for shots in a game was 96 against Adrian on March 12, 2016.

Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter as Maibuecher scored three of his goals and had an assist in the first 15 minutes. The Titans led 13-5 at halftime then went on a 7-1 scoring binge, with Doorenbos tallying three goals, in the third quarter to take a 20-6 edge after three.

Senior Nick Winter provided four assists in the contest along with scoring three goals as Illinois Wesleyan had 11 players register goals.

IWU had 61 ground balls compared to 32 for Wittenberg with junior J.C. Grabarek collecting 17 and going 23 of 27 on faceoffs. As a team, the Titans were 32 of 41 in faceoffs while the Tigers were 9 of 41.

Sophomore Benigno Houser had 11 saves in 50:50 in goal and freshman Will Harris made three saves playing the final 9:10.

Noah Moderwell had four goals and Lucas Klever added three for Wittenberg, who slipped to 1-2..

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan travels to Delaware, Ohio, for a meeting with Ohio Wesleyan at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday, March 1 ... Ohio Wesleyan is 2-1 after an 11-10 overtime win over Messiah on Saturday ... The Titans downed the nationally-ranked Battling Bishops, 19-18, last season.
