TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The No. 11-ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team handed No. 9 DePauw its first loss of the season in an 80-60 rout of the Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 24, in the Midwest Challenge at Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Titans improved to 3-2 and will meet No. 18-ranked Washington U. at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday for the tournament title. WashU (2-1) claimed a 62-37 victory in the opening game of the Midwest Challenge Saturday afternoon. The Bears defense held RHIT to 23.3 percent shooting from the field (10-43) and forced 25 turnovers.
Five Titans scored in double figures, led by seniors
Nina Anderson and
Maddie Merritt with 14 each and sophomore
Riley Brovelli with 14 points and 10 rebounds to help IWU to a 41-37 rebound advantage in the game. Sophomore
Kendall Sosa added 12 and junior
Sydney Shanks scored 10.
Illinois Wesleyan established the tone early, jumping out to a 30-12 first quarter lead and IWU shot .545 from the field (18 of 33) in the first half compared to .300 (9 of 30) for the Tigers.
The Titans scored 24 points off 19 DePauw turnovers and got 38 points from players off the bench compared to 20 for the Tigers.
Sydney Kopp scored a game-high 20 points for the Tigers (3-1).
