Maier's Hat Trick Leads Titans To 5-1 Victory Over Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. -- A hat trick from junior Mason Maier led the Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over the Monmouth College Scots on Thursday, September 14 from Peacock Memorial Athletic Park. Maier scored on his only three shots of the game and now leads the team with four goals on the season.

Five goals mark the highest scoring output for the Titans in the Kyle Schauls era. The last time IWU scored five or more goals was October 15, 2011 when the team scored six against Millikin.

With a win the Titans improved to 2-2-1 on the season while Monmouth fell to 0-5-0.

Illinois Wesleyan sought to earn a favorable decision on Thursday after the team drew with Monmouth, 0-0, in double overtime last season. Four first half goals sealed the deal for the Titans as they now lead their all-time series against Monmouth 14-3-3.

Despite playing a scoreless match through the first 23 minutes, Illinois Wesleyan scored three goals over the next four minutes to take a 3-0 lead over the Scots. Maier scored the first two goals for IWU, with his first coming via penalty kick. Freshman Keagan James also got on the board for the Titans scoring his second goal of the season in the 28th minute, just 23 seconds after Maier's second goal.

Sophomore Konrad Wasilewski scored the first goal of his career in the 35th minute to give the Titans a 4-0 lead in the first half. Monmouth cut IWU's lead to three with a goal by Agustin Miranda in the closing seconds of the half.

Maier scored his final goal of the afternoon early on in the second half off an assist from sophomore Justin Yaeger.

Freshman Joe Johnson made his first career start in goal for the Titans making four saves and allowing one goal. Monmouth's Chase Stroud made three saves and allowed five Titan goals.
