CAROL STREAM, Ill -- The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team managed just one run on 12 hits in a doubleheader loss to Wheaton College by scores of 4-1 and 3-0 at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream, Ill., on Saturday, May 6.
With six straight losses, the IWU overall record is 20-18 with a final mark of 13-11, tied for fourth place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with Elmhurst. The Titans will get the No. 4 seed in next week's CCIW Tournament as a result of winning two-of-three from the Bluejays during the regular season.
Wheaton improved to 24-15 overall and 14-9 in the CCIW. Wheaton will conclude its regular season on Monday, traveling to North Central (20-15, 15-8 CCIW). The winner of that game will be the CCIW regular season champion and serve as the host for the CCIW Tournament. Augustana (26-12, 14-10 CCIW) is ensconced as the No. 3 seed in the tourney.
In game one Saturday, senior shortstop
Jarrod Juskiewicz and sophomore leftfielder
John Bosco each had two of IWU's eight hits with Juskiewicz scoring the only run and Bosco getting the only run batted in with a double, the lone extra base hit of the day.
Freshmen
Jim O'Brien (2-1) and
David Taylor limited the Thunder to nine hits across eight innings. The Thunder scored three times in the second on a single and two doubles.
Junior second baseman
Gino Cavalieri had two singles while
Joe Marras and
Seth Palmby each had one single in a four-hit IWU offensive output. Six Illinois Wesleyan pitchers scattered seven hits in the second game as Wheaton scored two (one unearned) off senior
Jonathan Vlk (2-4) in the fifth to provide all the offense needed.
With the three straight wins over IWU this weekend, the Thunder have been on a roll. Their 24 wins ties the single season program record established in 2010...Wheaton's 14 CCIW victories ties the single season program record established in 2015.
