LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Illinois Wesleyan softball team managed only four hits in a 3-1 loss to Transylvania University in the first game of the NCAA Division III Super Regional at Hall Field in Lexington, Ky., on Friday, May 19.
The Titans had a six-game winning streak snapped and are now 34-13 ahead of Saturday's game at 11 a.m. (Central). IWU would need to win that game to force a deciding game three against Transylvania, who improved to 35-11 with their 11th consecutive victory.
Trailing 2-0 after three innings, IWU scored its only run in the top of the fourth when sophomore centerfielder
Jillian Runyon led off with a triple and came home on a sacrifice fly by freshman leftfielder
Sydney Alery.
Runyon also had a bunt base hit while freshman second baseman
Shelby Fulk had a seventh-inning double and junior rightfielder
Maggie Graham had a single for IWU's only other safeties.
Junior
Mackenzie Marquis (13-7) took the loss, going the first 2 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Freshman
Brea Walker pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits while striking out six.
