IWU Softball Works Overtime for Sweep at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Illinois Wesleyan softball team swept a doubleheader at Carthage College on Saturday, April 22, winning the first game 4-1 in 12 innings and rallying for an 8-4 win in game two.

The Titans are 23-11 overall and 7-5 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, good for third place, while the Lady Reds fall to 22-12 overall and 11-3 in CCIW action.

Senior third baseman Katie Caulfield tied a 13-year-old school game record with five hits in the first game. Brynn Hasse also had five hits in a game at Maryville (Mo.) on April 18, 2004.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the 12th inning, sophomore first baseman Julie Josten led off with a home run. With one out, freshman designated hitter Sydnie Wells reached on a dropped fly by the rightfielder and, with two outs, Sydney Alery homered to bring home Wells and give IWU a 4-1 lead.

Junior Mackenzie Marquis started the game and pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits with eight strikeouts. Freshman Brea Walker (9-3) earned the win with 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits with six strikeouts.

The resilient Titans trailed 4-1 after 4 1/2 innings of game two before posting six runs in the last of the fifth to grab a 7-4 lead. With one out, junior Amanda Lack singled and pinch runner Mia Massaro advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Alery walked and freshman Sam Berghoff singled to bring home Massaro. Freshman Shelby Fulk then singled to chase home Alery and Berghoff. After Fulk stole second, she advamced to third on a single by junior Maggie Graham and scored on a shortstop throwing error. Caulfield singled to score Graham and later scored herself on a single to rightfield by Walker.

Taylor Marvin was the starter and went 2 2/3, allowing one earned run on five hits before Walker (10-3) tossed the remaining 4 1/3 innings, scattering three hits with two strikeouts.

NOTES: With 10 wins, Walker is one away from tying the record for pitching victories by a freshman. Kerri Doyle (11-3 in 1992) and A.J. Reeley (11-4 in 2000) each won 11 games in the freshman season for the school record ... Sophomore centerfielder Jillian Runyon now has 40 stolen bases, one away from tying her season mark of 41 set last year, She has 81 in her career and the all-time leader is Monica Urban with 94 (2006-09), followed by Nicole Williams with 88 (2001-04).

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan has a doubleheader at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis., at 12 p.m. on Sunday. The Pioneers are 15-17 overall and 6-6 in the CCIW after two losses to Millikin on Saturday.
