Big Third Quarter Propels Titans Past Wis.-Stevens Point

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team outscored Wis.-Stevens Point by 14 in the third quarter en route to posting a 92-69 nonconference win at the Shirk Center on Saturday, Dec. 16.

The Titans won their sixth straight and improved to 8-2 overall while the Pointers slipped to 5-4.

Titan senior Molly McGraw led the team with 19 points and was 11-for-11 from the free throw line. The percentage ties a school mark and is one short of the 12 of 12 done by Elisa Ettner against North Park on Feb. 24, 2001.

Her 19 points tonight led her past the 1,300 point scoring mark to 1,309 where she sits in 7th all-time at Illinois Wesleyan behind the 1,339 points scored by Mallory Heydorn (2005-2009).

Junior Nina Anderson equaled her career-high with 16 points and junior Maddie Merritt added 15 points. Freshman Kendall Sosa was also in double figures with 10 markers.

Junior Ashley Schneider led the team with her career-best of nine rebounds and senior Rebekah Ehresman handed out eight assists to match her career-best. All 13 members of the Titan team found their way into the action on Saturday evening.

Illinois Wesleyan shot .950 from the free throw line, sinking 19 of 20 tosses. That percentage is behind only the 1.000 percent done by the 2014 team (12 for 12) against North Park and the 11 for 11 effort at Wis.-Oshkosh in 2000.

Illinois Wesleyan shot .485 percent from the floor on Saturday which included seven made 3-pointers. Defensively the Titans held Stevens Point to a 2-of-11 performance from beyond the arc.

IWU's pressure defense forced the Pointers into 24 turnovers which resulted in 39 points off turnovers for the Titans. The Titans narrowly won the rebounding battle, 33-30, but hauled in five more offensive rebounds than Stevens Point. Both teams found success in the paint, scoring 32 apiece down low.

The Titans led 38-35 at halftime and held a narrow 44-42 lead before a technical foul on the Pointers' bench allowed McGraw to sink four straight free throws. Illinois Wesleyan outscored Stevens Point 25-10 during the final 6:40 of the third quarter to snag a commanding 69-52 lead. IWU led by as many as 25 points with 1:59 remaining in the fourth quarter, their largest lead of the contest.

Lexi (13) and Mickey Roland (12) scored a combined 25 points for the Pointers. Brooke Geier led the team with eight rebounds and tied the Rolands for the team best with three assists.
