Illinois Wesleyan Men's Soccer Falters In CCIW Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team fell by a final score of 2-1 (OT) to Carthage College in the CCIW tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Junior Blake Tempel scored the lone goal for IWU off assists from junior Ben Nielsen and freshman Keagan James.

Illinois Wesleyan exits the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) conference tournament with an overall record of 11-6-1 for the season. Carthage improved to 13-6-2 and advances to the conference tournament championship where they will face the winner of No. 1-seeded North Park and No. 4-seeded North Central.

With a loss, the Titans fell to 0-4-2 in CCIW tournament history. The 2017 season marked the first time the men's soccer program hosted the first round of the conference tournament.

Tempel opened the scoring during the contest, banking a shot off the post in the 43rd minute for his second goal of the season. The Mokena native's goal proved to be the only offense from either side in the first half.

Illinois Wesleyan's defense held strong through the first 65 minutes of action before Carthage's Kevin Penarrieta scored the equalizer from the top of the box after a failed clearance by IWU.

After regulation ended with the score knotted up at 1-all, Carthage's Luke Schoffstall scored the game-winning tally in the 97th minute to end the Titans conference championship hopes. Sophomore Doug Ballard had the first chance of the period, but missed left on his second shot of the match.

Tempel and sophomore Justin Yaeger accounted Illinois Wesleyan's three shots on goal during the contest compared to eight for Carthage. The Red Men out-shot the Titans 15-11 overall and 8-3 in shots on goal.

Sophomore Alex Ruckstaetter matched his season-high with six saves but allowed both goals. For the Red Men, Brayan Arce Justiniano made two saves and allowed the lone goal.
