DECORAH, Iowa – Illinois Wesleyan got a run-scoring single from
Maggie Graham in the bottom of the seventh to claim an 8-7 win over Luther College and force the third and deciding game in the NCAA Division III Super Regional at Decorah, Iowa, on Saturday, May 21.
Illinois Wesleyan improved to 34-11 and Luther slipped to 40-4. The same two teams will play at 4:40 p.m. with a berth in the Division III finals in Salem, Va. at stake.
After falling behind 7-6 in the top of the seventh, the Titans scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman second baseman
Julie Josten led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior first baseman
Cassidy Tarpey. A double to leftcenter by
Katie Caulfield brought in Josten before Graham's game-winning single.
The Titans got on the board in the second inning as Josten led off with a single. Tarpey reached on a sacrifice and both runners advanced to second and third on a throwing error by the pitcher. With one out, Graham hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield to score Josten.
In the top of the fourth, Luther scored three runs on three hits with the help of three Titan errors
The Titans closed to within one at 3-2, scoring a single run in the bottom of the fifth when senior catcher
Danielle Smith was hit by a pitch to bring home freshman
Jillian Runyon, who had reached on an infield single.
IWU scored four runs in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead. With one out, sophomore
Amanda Lack walked, Graham reached on an infield single and pinch hitter
Summer Stitt loaded the bases with a single to leftfield. Senior shortstop
Sam Gudat's single to center knocked in two runs to tie the score at 4-4. Senior
Mary Rankin hit a double to leftfield to bring in a pair of runs and send IWU ahead by two.
Senior
Jenna Noland (13-4) was the winning pitcher, going 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter
Mackenzie Marquis.
