ELMHURST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team used a record-setting 17-run, 15-hit third inning to take a 21-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin road victory over Elmhurst at Butterfield Park on Sunday, April 3.
IWU evens their record to 9-9 overall and 2-1 in the CCIW while the Bluejays fell to 12-7 and 1-2 in the CCIW.
The 17 runs scored in the third inning is the most runs in a single-inning in school history, eclipsing the old record of 11 scored in the 11th inning against Christian Brothers University on March 22, 2007.
The 25 hits ties a modern day school-record set on April 18, 2006 at Monmouth College and the 15 hits in the third inning is tied for second in NCAA Divsion III history, trailing only St. Scholastica, who pounded out 16 hits in an inning vs. North Central (Minn.) on May 3, 2013. SUNY Cortland also had 15 hits in an inning against SUNY New Paltz on April 13, 1997.
The inning included five doubles, three home runs and seven singles for 29 total bases, sixth most in an NCAA Division III inning, and the five doubles is tied for second in a D-III inning. Marietta had 35 total bases in an inning vs. LaRoche on April 7, 1999, and Wis.-Stevens Point had six doubles in an inning vs. Lakeland on April 18, 2005.
Illinois Wesleyan led 1-0 after one inning of play before Elmhurst would tie the game at two heading into the top of the third. The first five Titans that came up to bat in the third-inning all recorded a hit, with seniors
Adam Glogovsky and
Matthew Mardis along with freshman
John Bosco each coming up to bat three times in the inning. IWU would hit three home runs in the inning, coming off the bats of Mardis, junior catcher
Pat Mollo, and a grand slam by Glogovsky, who had six runs batted in in the inning.
The bats would cool off following the record-setting third as IWU added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings while allowing five more Bluejay runs to force the 10 run mercy-rule into effect after seven innings.
Illinois Wesleyan was led by junior shortstop
Jarrod Juskiewicz, who went 5-for-6 with one RBI coming from a solo home run in the fourth while Glogovsky finished 3-for-3, scoring all three times. The Titans, who pounded out 11 extra-base hits, also got a four-hit day from Bosco, who knocked home two runs while scoring three times.
Junior righthander
Sean Coonan (1-1) pitched a complete game to earn the win, giving up seven runs (five earned) and striking out four.
